Abstract

AbstractThis article contributes to the field of grammar in interaction by studying the syntax and interactional function of direct reported speech constructions in talk-in-interaction. The quoting constructions in question all consist of direct reported speech preceded by a hanging topic or a hanging scene-setter and an optional quoting frame. The quoting frame consists of either ba(ra) ‘only; like’ or såhär ‘like this’ preceded by a subject and a finite verb, the latter being optional for quoting frames with ba. The study’s theoretical framework draws on interactional linguistics and usage-based construction grammar while its methods draw on conversation analysis to examine a collection of 38 quoting constructions excerpted from 10 conversation-based podcasts. The collection is analysed both in terms of what action the quoting construction performs, as well as how the construction itself is packaged syntactically, functionally and prosodically. The results show that the speakers use the constructions for assessments and as climaxes in storytelling. Syntactically, the hanging topic/scene together with the quoting frame frequently exhibits verb-third word order, even when inversion is possible. Functionally, both the hanging topic/scene and the quoting frame contextualise the quote, but are not functionally independent units themselves. Prosodically, the hanging topic/scene, quoting frame and quote each consist of one prosodic unit. The findings are formalised within an interactional construction grammar framework and the article presents a formalisation of two quoting constructions with ba and såhär respectively, as well as a draft of a meta-construction generalising not only over the ba- and såhär-constructions, but also over other quoting constructions in Swedish.
