Abstract

Namn och bygd 112 (2024), –1.Magnus Källström, Swedish National Heritage Board, Stockholm/Visby: The runestone U 109 from Bisslinge in Ed Parish. A newly discovered runestone drawing and somewhat about the name Guðfastr. The long-lost U 109 runestone from Bisslinge in Ed Parish, Uppland, has previously only been described in a collection of notes and a copper engraving by Johannes Bureus. Using a previously overlooked source from the second part of the 18th century, this article illustrates that the inscription can be completed with the name of the deceased, Guðfastr. It has also been suggested that the U 110 fragment from the same location originally belonged to this stone. In addition, the article discusses the geographical distribution of the name Guðfastr in the Viking Age and medieval sources. It explores the relationship with other names compounded using the element Guð-, resulting in the discovery of a previously overlooked woman’s name Guðfast in the runic corpus.
